A proxy indicator for the Intellectual Capital of Nations

After reading the paper on "Intellectual Capital of Nations" by Prof. Leif Edvinsson and Prof. Carol Yeh-Yun Lin, I was impressed that the two Professors had managed to rank nations on their accumulated Intellectual Capital by a detailed study of their publicly available indicators. What intrigued me however was why this study had not been taken forward by others since 2005. Surely an annual ranking of the Intellectual Capital of nations can be very important for multiple target audiences. In…See More

The power of innovation

Forbes magazine regularly publishes the list of the most innovative companies in the world. If you read this list every year, two facts will readily emerge - firstly most companies in the list never get off it and secondly all of these companies are household names. This implies that all of these companies have continuously innovated their way to success! As Intellectual Capital practitioners this is an important pattern for us to realize and recognize. My post titled…See More

Profile Information

What is your interest in smarter companies?
I am a IC professional - offering IC Discovery, Measurement, Reporting and Valuation services.
For you, what is the definition of intangible capital?
Intellectual Capital (for a business) is the aggregate of those intangible assets that give it a competetive edge in the marketplace.
How do intangibles relate to your work?
I am fixated on the idea of valuing the Intellectual Capital of businesses in monetary terms. This I believe, is the one lacuna in our current scheme of things. I have developed the icTracker software (www.attainix.com/ictracker.aspx) explictly for this purpose. At present, this software values the Intellectual Capital of Indian businesses, but I have plans to extend it to International businesses in the future.

Just read your paper "What is IC and why it should be measured." Excellent job. I especially like the cash flow diagram and your statement:

...tangible asets can be acquired by just about any business...however, intangible assets have to be cultivated, nourished and nurtured

I hope that you will be able to participate in our IC Practitioners call on June 14.
